How UTMs work in GA4, and how AdLever simplifies attribution tracking across campaigns.
Tracking the effectiveness of your campaigns can feel like navigating without a map. Without clear data, it’s hard to know which marketing efforts actually bring people to your website and what they do once they arrive.
That’s what UTMs are for. UTMs — Urchin Tracking Modules — are small snippets added to the end of a URL that record where a visitor came from. Used consistently, they give you a clear picture of how people reach your site and what leads to conversions.

UTMs are tags appended to a URL that pass specific information to analytics tools. A tagged link looks like this:

Each parameter does a specific job:
Two optional parameters are also worth knowing: utm_term, used for paid search keywords, and utm_content, used to tell apart multiple links within the same campaign.
When someone clicks a tagged link, GA4 records those parameters and credits the visit to the right source, medium, and campaign.
GA4 organizes traffic differently from the analytics tools that came before it, but the UTM data is all there.
Go to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. Sessions are grouped by channel, source, medium, and campaign.
Add dimensions like Session source / medium or Session campaign to break the same data down by your UTM parameters.
The Explore section lets you build your own reports. Drag in Session source, Session medium, and Session campaign to compare traffic in whatever combination you need.
Say you run a spring sale promoted by email and on social. You tag the email link with utm_source=newsletter and utm_medium=email, and the Facebook link with utm_source=facebook and utm_medium=social, using utm_campaign=spring_sale on both. In GA4 you can then compare sessions and conversions from each channel side by side.
Attribution models decide how credit gets assigned across the touchpoints that lead to a conversion. UTMs supply the raw data those models depend on.
Single-touch attribution gives all the credit to one interaction — usually the first or last click. Multi-touch attribution spreads credit across several interactions in the customer journey. GA4 supports multi-touch models, including data-driven attribution.
Because UTMs label every touchpoint clearly, GA4 can reconstruct the sequence of interactions before a conversion. Someone might click a social ad, return later through an email link, and convert on a third visit. With consistent tagging, each of those steps is identifiable rather than lumped into direct or unassigned traffic.
Accurate attribution leads to better budget decisions, clearer insight into which messages work, and a more honest read on return.
